Komodo vs Novag Citrine

Komodo vs Novag

Below is a link to my second video for Chess Tech. Hopefully I can keep improving.

 Komodo vs Novag Citrine

I finally was able to get the analysis from to rate the play. Komodo came in at 2450 while the Novag citrine rated 2050. Komodo as you might expect outplayed the Novag in all three phases of the game.

How Deep?

People ask how many moves ahead can I look. I say one. Mostly it's true. I'm looking at positional elements unless I see some tactical element to trigger a deeper dive. In this position I was losing badly until my opponent made the mistake Kg2. Right away I saw Nh4 and Ne8 as double checks. White would only have one reply. The King must move. Can you solve the mate in 5? I did but didn't realize both Knight moves work.

Here is the whole game. The position occurs at move 42.

GameKnot Review

Gameknot is a Chess Playing Website. At first it seems kind of antiquated.

What it lacks in modern polish it seems to make up for in it's people. A game with 3 day time controls finished in a week. The players are there to play! Plus the website is very much in service of the game. Lots of study aids. Openings, puzzles, a searchable 1.6 million game database. They provide code and links for other web / blog developers. The ads are annoying but hey everyone has bills to pay.

Here is the result of the puzzle of the day code they provided.

A Giant Resource

I've placed links to Bill Wall's Chess website on my blog in the past. I thought it might be helpful to point out some of the information available on this giant resource site.

Full disclosure Mr. Wall has linked to this blog from his Resources list. The site is huge. As you would expect with a site that contains this many links some of them are broken. If you report them he does fix or remove them. My favorite part of the site is farther down. Scroll down to find this section.

Game collections sorted by Players, Openings, Tournaments, and EBooks. If you don't want to scroll and hunt for what you want you can search. Just press CTRL and F (find). Type in what you want to look for. Press the arrow keys to step through the list returned by your search. Check it out Bill Wall's Chess Website.

Monday, May 1, 2023 Adds Links to Chessable and Aimchess purchased the Magnus Group, Chessable, and Aimchess. I noticed recently links added under the learn menu. I found the handoff a bit clumsy as the sign in process was still required.

Update Novag Citrine Drivers (Fritz and more).

I came across this website. It contains drivers for the Novag Citrine and other computer connected chess boards.

I was particularly interested in the Novag Citrine to Fritz drivers. Look for the following paragraph.

"Fritz and ChessBase

It took me a long time to get my drivers to work in Fritz and I finally succeeded in June 2022. They need to be 64 bit and that is why they are different files to the other drivers which are all 32 bit. This means they will only run in Fritz versions 15 and above and ChessBase 13 and above (although I think 12 also had an option for 64 bit)."

I installed the software and it worked immediately.

If need help connecting your Citrine to the computer here is a link to my guide. (

I have Fritz 16 and am very pleased to be able to use it with the old Novag. After installing the program (Fritz-CB.dll) I just opened the Fritz program. Selected Board from the top row tabs (see picture below) and clicked the DGT board check box. The Control window popped up and the connection was made. I hope someone finds this info helpful.

Chat GPT on Technology in Chess

You may have heard about this new technology. I thought I would apply it to the idea of the use of technology in chess. What do you think about it's response.

Technology has had a significant impact on the study of chess. One of the main ways that technology has been used in chess is through the development of chess engines. These are programs that are able to analyze chess positions and provide recommendations for the best moves to make. These programs have become increasingly sophisticated and are now able to beat even the strongest human players.

Another way that technology has impacted the study of chess is through the use of databases. There are now vast collections of recorded chess games that can be searched and analyzed using computer programs. This has made it much easier for players to study the games of past masters and learn from their strategies and tactics.

Online chess platforms have also made it possible for players to study and play chess from anywhere in the world. There are now many websites and apps that allow players to connect and play chess games online, as well as access a wide range of learning resources and tools.

Finally, technology has played a role in the broadcast and coverage of chess tournaments. Many chess tournaments are now streamed online, and there are also numerous chess-related podcasts, videos, and other forms of media that are available through the internet. This has made it easier for chess enthusiasts to follow the latest developments in the world of chess.
